Project X IO Golf Shaft Review

The Project X IO is a golf shaft designed to be “individually optimized” in terms of weight and torque to help you get the most out of your iron shots. Each shaft features a specific weight and trajectory progression in mind that will equally benefit faster swinging or slower tempo players.

Project X IO Details

Using the “DNA” of multiple shaft technologies from the brand, the Project X IO is one of the more unique iron golf shafts on the market. As Project X IO increases in flex, it gets 5g heavier and is geometrically modified to launch lower. This provides an individually optimized shaft for each flex.

Project X IO is ideal for players who love the stability of Project X but need an easier to load shaft profile and are looking for a lighter weight option. In other words, if you love the feel of past Project X golf shafts but found previous offerings too heavy or stout, the Project X IO might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.

These shafts are best for players with a moderate swing tempo and prefer a medium shot trajectory with mid-to-high spin.

Feel and Performance

Having not had much luck using Project X golf shafts in my irons in the past, I was skeptical on how Project X IO would be any different. My club fitter suggested I give them a try during a recent product review for another iron brand, and I’m glad that I listened.

The Project X IO 6.0 (stiff flex) was what was recommended to me, which at 110 grams is right around where I prefer my golf shaft weight to be. The IO’s stepless chrome design is pleasing to the eye and looks more like graphite than steel, which is another preference of mine.

When coupled with a high-launch, low center-of-gravity cavity back iron, these golf shafts performed perfectly. The golf ball didn’t balloon into the air yet featured a “high enough” trajectory to get the most out of my shots. This equated to longer distances and ideal spin rates, helping me hold approach shots onto the green from many distances.

Impact felt solid and with just enough feedback to exude a “softer” feel than other Project X shafts I’ve tried. Those would usually feel more like lumbar; very little flex and a harsh-yet-sturdy sensation in my hands. The Project X IO was anything but.

Overall Impression

I left my fitting with a new order of irons that included these golf shafts. I loved everything about them, and the shot metrics spoke for themselves. While I never would have tried the Project X IO shafts had it not been for the keen eye of my club fitter, I am sure glad that I did.
