Westwood New WGR #1; Woods' Streak Snapped

We all knew it was going to happen weeks ago; Tiger Woods is no longer the #1 golfer in the world, according to the World Golf Rankings.  Lee Westwood has overtaken Tiger for the first time since 2005 when Woods captured the top-spot.

What should have been a bigger deal for golf fans is turning into an afterthought, however.  The same can be said for those of us in the golf blogosphere; it just doesn't seem to matter too much.  Well.. perhaps a better statement would be that no one is really sure if the WGR means a darn thing in the first place.  After all, what PGA Player in the Top 5 doesn't think they are the best golfer in the world?  Does Westwood really need a ranking spot to tell him that he can play?  Does Martin Kaymer or Phil Mickelson think they are a better all-around player than Westy?  Probably.

In terms of golf history, Tiger Woods holding the #1 spot for 5 years is rather significant.  Not many people will argue with that.  Greg Norman is the only other PGA player to have held the #1 ranking in a similar fashion many years ago.  However, Woods' ranking status had been in jeopardy for most of the 2010 PGA season, and it was really just a matter of time before someone took it from him.

What is even more interesting is the fact that Westwood's seat as WGR #1 may be short-lived.  As PGATour.com explains, the No. 1 ranking could change again this week at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, where four players could go to the top: Westwood, Woods, Kaymer and Phil Mickelson.
