Solheim Cup is Under Way!

The 11th Solheim Cup is officially under way after an impressive opening ceremony at the Rich Harvest Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Home to the Northern Illinois Huskies, Rich Harvest will prove to be a daunting task for both teams, but perhaps the golfer with most eyes on her will be rookie Michelle Wie.

Tomorrow morning will mark Wie's first Solheim Cup experience while teaming up with Morgan Pressell to take on the defending Women's British Open champion Catriona Matthew and Maria Hjorth in the final foursomes match of the day. Both teams understand that success in this event will weigh heavily on what tone is set very early on in play.

According to Paula Creamer (via Seattle Post-Intelligencer), "We're going to try and get the fans as loud as they can" (2009).

Since the U.S. won in 2007, the American side needs just 14 points to retain the Cup, while the European team must reach 14 1/2 points to reclaim the Cup.
