Showdown at Bridgestone

With yet another strong showing in a Major at the 2010 Open Championship, Lee Westwood is inching ever slow closer to the top spot in the World Golf Rankings.

While Mickelson has long been seen as the appropriate and probable golfer to dethrone a struggling Tiger Woods from his seat on the WGR, Westwood continues his consistent play and has strengthened his chances at surpassing both players above him (Westy is currently ranked third). Finishing in second place at the Open certainly helped his case, along with Woods finishing in 23rd and Mickelson placing at 48th.

The next time all three players will be in the same field in August 5-8, 2010 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Traditionally, Woods has destroyed the field at most WGC events, however nothing is certain anymore following his inconsistent and oftentimes downright ugly course management. Mickelson still has the best chance at earning the top spot at Bridgestone. However, Westwood can overcome both players in front of him with a win at the same event, becoming the new WGR #1 for the first time since June 2005.
