Fantasy Golf Picks: Shell Houston Open

Martin Laird won last week's Arnold Palmer Invitation at Bay Hill in exciting fashion, and the PGA Tour makes its way to Humble, TX for this week's Shell Houston Open.  As the final stop on Tour before the season's first Major, The Masters, many of the top players will be looking to fine-tune their game before heading to Augusta.  Defending champion Anthony Kim returns to Redstone Golf Club, but his less-than-stellar play thus far in 2011 may not make him a wise choice to start this week.  Of course, he did win last year's event in a playoff without hitting many fairways, so maybe this is the week he turns his year around.  Read on to see who I chose for my 2011 Shell Houston Open fantasy golf picks.  A List Starter: Marc Leishman; Bench: Matt Kuchar

Finishing tied for third at Bay Hill, Leishman is beginning to play some stellar golf this season, missing only one cut in eight events played to this point.  Leishman also recorded an impressive bogey-free round of 66 last Saturday, catapulting him to the Top 5 in Arnie's event.  Kuchar continues to play solid golf in 2011, racking up 47 fantasy golf points in the process.  He returns to the Tour this week after a two-week break (and 5 Top 10 finishes in 7 starts so far this season).  While I give the nod to Leishman today, I very well may switch up my starter before Thursday and give the ball to Kuch.

B List

Starters: Spencer Levin, Hunter Mahan; Bench: John Senden, Y.E. Yang

This group of "B" players has been giving me fits this fantasy golf season.  Every week seems like a complete crap-shoot for my roster, and this week is really no exception.  Levin was the 18-hole leader at Bay Hill before ultimately finished tied for sixth.  Mahan had a disappointing tournament last week (T38), but he also has three top-11 finishes this season.  While Levin and Mahan are solid starts for Redstone (especially since they are two of the most consistent players in 2011), I could have literally thrown a dart at a list of the ermaining players for my bench and been happy.  Thus, we have Senden and Yang as my reserves for this week.

C List

Starter: Jason Day; Bench: Francesco Molinari

In 2008, Day tied for 8th at Redstone and continues to be a Tour-leader in putting and scrambling in 2011.  With stats like that heading in to the Shell Houston Open, which is notorious for producing winners who are strong in both categories, he very well could have a shot at winning this week.  Molinari seems to always be a solid option as a reserve, and he'll be that very thing for me this week.
