Fantasy Golf Picks: HP Byron Nelson Championship
Starter: Marc Leishman; Bench: Dustin Johnson
This week's PGA Tour stop takes us to the HP Byron Nelson Championship at TPC Four Seasons in Irving, Texas. While there are a few top-players in the field this week (including Dustin Johnson), the field will be mainly comprised of a few lesser-known names to consider when filling out your fantasy golf picks. Marc Leishman has carded consecutive top-15's at this event over the last couple of years, and Johnson has typically played very well in the week before the US Open. He has also recorded a few top-10 finishes at the Byron Nelson event.
B List
Starters: D.A. Points, John Sendon; Bench: Jeff Overton, J.J. Henry
Points has struggled considerably since his win earlier this season in February, however he has had some success at this event in his career. Here's hoping a good player can find his game this week in Irving. Jeff Overton played exceptional golf at this event last season, finishing as the runner-up to eventual winner Jason Day in 2010. To this point, however, Overton has struggled in 2011 but will look to right his ship as well. Sendon and Henry are simply strong fantasy golf picks for this week based on their average point distributions (30.5 and 29.2, respectively). Both of those players have top-10's this season as well, and have consistently made their moves on Saturday in terms of fantasy points.
C List
Starter: Jason Day; Bench: Scott Verplank
Day is the returning champion this week after displaying an impressive two-shot victory at the Nelson in 2010. He also continues a relatively solid fantasy golf season in 2011, averaging 33.60 points per tournament in my Yahoo league. Scotty Verplank loves this event, or so it seems, and has performed wonderfully at the Nelson each year since 2007 (which he won). Verplank also finished in the top-5 last season in this event.
