Chicagoland Golf in the Winter

Don't look now, Chicagoland golfers, but snow is in the forecast for this weekend and we haven't even hit November yet. What does this mean for those of us who just are not ready to put the clubs down for the season?

Never fear, my fellow golf fanatics. Many courses in the area continue to offer tee times and incredible discounts well past Thanksgiving for those of us who don't mind a round in mittens. For example, Country Lakes Golf Club in Naperville, Illinois offers tee times and 18 holes of golf for a mere $10 in the winter months. Furthermore, Country Lakes also offers a fun event named the "Sled Open" where golfers are able to pull their golf clubs around on sleds.

Even the more famous courses are open for the winter, including Cog Hill (the site of this year's BMW Championship). Comprised of 4 courses and located in Lemont, Illinois, this renowned collection of courses maintains tee times annually throughout the year on at least 2 of the tracks, sometimes including Dubsdread. As Dave Berner, head contributor to Golf Illinois writes:

Head Golf Professional, Jeff Rimsnider has been working at Cog Hill for 16 years and doesn't remember a single day when at least two of the courses weren't open.

"The greenskeepers have always worried about what winter play might do to the turf, " says Rimsnider. "But it really doesn't do a lot of damage. The spring comes and everything seems to just repair itself. There may be a little more work for the crews, but all-in-all, it's worth it" (2009)

Not prepared to head out in the cold for 3 hours? You could also hit up one of many golf domes in the area, including Green Garden in Frankfurt. Golfers are able to utilize an indoor driving range and miniature golf course to focus more on putting while Mother Nature takes her toll on the courses outside (which, of course, are also open for play).

As the weather continues to turn for the worse here in Chicagoland, golfers can take solace in the fact that there are many opportunities to prevent his or her game from doing the same.
