Sub 70 799 Irons Review

The Sub 70 799 irons are the brand’s most forgiving offering in their lineup. Bordering on a hybrid-iron, the 799 irons are best suited for mid-to-high handicap players or beginners who need more distance, more accuracy, and as much forgiveness as possible.

Mrs. GU, Kristen, and I recently visited Sub 70’s fitting studio in Sycamore, IL where she got custom fit into the 799 irons. As a novice golfer, Kristen was in search for all the qualities the 799 irons offer.

Let’s take a deeper look.

Sub 70 799 Irons Design

A game-improvement iron in the traditional sense, the 799 irons feature a wide sole, deep face and appear to be more like mini-hybrids than a typical iron. As the brand’s website explains, the 799 irons are for the player seeking straighter, higher ball flights.

The 799 utilizes hollow body technology with an ultra-thin 1.7mm, 455 Carpenter Steel face. The head is then injected with TPE resin for improved feel, increased energy transfer and ball speeds. Perimeter weighting, high MOI and a revised ultra-wide sole design provide the ultimate in forgiveness, particularly for the player who has a lower swing speed.

Performance and Feel

At address, the 799 irons look a bit hefty compared to your typical iron. Kristen needed more forgiveness and ball speed, however she very much enjoys the look of an iron. Right off the bat she knew she would need to adjust to this new look at address.

After her first swing with the 799’s, she was a convert.

The 799 feels excellent at impact, offering a soft yet powerful feel through the golf ball. These irons feel very much like a hybrid: powerful, stable and highly forgiving. You can almost swing on auto-pilot with the 799’s as ball speeds, launch, and even spin rate remained consistent with every swing.

In terms of metrics, the 799’s launch a bit higher than you’d expect from a comparable iron (i.e. 6-iron in a traditional set to the 799’s 6-iron). Spin rates were a tad lower, too, due to the club’s focus on distance and speed.

This combination of higher launch with muted spin allows for straight shots that stay on line without much curvature in either direction. These are irons that allow the player to pick a target and swing straight at it without worrying about too much draw or fade.

Distance was yet another benefit for the 799’s compared to traditional irons. For Kristen, they provided 10-15 yards more distance than her previous set across the board. This was a huge positive for her game, as it would be for any golfer who struggles in this area.

Overall Impression

While they might not be your traditional-looking iron, the Sub 70 799 irons deliver on every promise in terms of forgiveness, distance and accuracy. Golfers of a certain skill level and handicap level will benefit most from the 799’s, particularly those with slower swings. These are truly excellent irons designed to help any golfer enjoy the game more.
