Callaway Golf has unveiled their new Epic Super Hybrid via press release this morning. Billed to feature “driver DNA in a hybrid,” the Epic Super Hybrid is the most technologically advanced Callaway has ever designed.

It also comes with a $400 price tag.

Callaway Super Hybrid Technology

Obviously a price of that magnitude for a hybrid is going to raise eyebrows. Where most competing hybrids in this category retail for hundreds of dollars less, Callaway has gone out on a limb and hopes the Epic Super Hybrid’s technology speaks for itself.

What exactly is “driver DNA?” According to Callaway, that includes their patented Jailbreak A.I. Velocity Blades that help with clubhead stability and distance. Previously found in the brand’s recent driver and fairway wood offerings, the latest rendition of the industry-first Jailbreak technology has won over many golfers across the handicap spectrum. There is no doubt that this tech is the real deal.

The Epic Super Hybrid also features Flash Face: Callaway’s A.I. titanium clubface that produces insane ball speeds. Couple that with a fully adjustable hosel and multiple clubface profiles (dependent on loft), you’ve literally got a mini-driver-like club designed for longer distances and forgiveness in your long-iron category.

The Price Tag

While the above technology and features are impressive to say the least — almost to the point where this feels like a direct competitor to TaylorMade’s Mini Driver 300 — golfers will undoubtedly balk at the price tag of $400.

The cold, hard truth is that technology, design, and Artificial Intelligence costs a heck of a lot. Callaway leads the pack in terms of club design utilizing the latest and greatest technologies, and the result is some of the best-performing equipment in the game. There’s no surprise that multiple recent winners on all professional Tours have at least a Callaway driver, wood, or hybrid in their bag.

But $400?? That’s more than the vast majority of competing hybrids, some fairway woods, and even some direct-to-consumer driver brands. Right out of the gate, Callaway has segmented the ideal demographic for the Epic Super Hybrid solely on price alone, despite the wide range of golfers who may benefit from its technology.

Of course, this is not to take anything away from the club’s actual performance. Full transparency: I’ve not hit the Epic Super Hybrid, but I am confident in predicting that it’s incredible.

I’m just not sure how many golfers will afford to benefit from this exciting new release from one of the most popular brands in golf.
