Project X Iron Shaft Review
Project X iron shafts have long been one of the most popular options on the market. Having tried these iron shafts many times over the years — in different iron builds as well — I can safely say the Project X shaft is one of the best in the game.
Boasting a sturdy, stout build geared toward stronger players who want a flat, penetrating ball flight, the Project X irons shafts deliver on all promises.
Project X Iron Shaft Build and Details
First things first: these irons shafts aren’t for everybody.
That isn’t a critique as much as an explanation, considering the golfer demographic for which they were designed: strong, fast-swinging players. These shafts have very stout flex profile, even if you’re going with a “regular” labeled flex. Since there is no standard for shaft flex types, it’s always important to get fitted to iron shafts before making your purchase. This is especially true with the Project X.
The Project X iron was built to help players keep the golf ball down without too much lift or “ballooning” on iron shots. If a golfer is a fast swinger, they’ll produce higher ball speeds, higher spin, and therefore more lift on the ball (launch). The Project X iron shafts help balance these metrics out for this player category, which optimizes distance and control on shots. The result is a lower shot trajectory, lower spin, and more predictability in your shots.
Performance and Feel
Back in my day when I swung the club much faster than I do now, the Project X was my preferred choice of iron shaft. Over the years my swing has changed in both tempo and speed, which has placed me in an iron shaft category different from the Project X.
This is due to the stout feel of the shafts. The marketing is true: if you’re not a fast swinger, you’ll have trouble getting these shafts back to square at impact. The behave as they were designed, which is a testament to the overall development of the Project X iron shafts.
At impact, this stoutness reverberates throughout your hands and you can feel the strength of these shafts. There is very little “give” in the shaft, and well-struck shots are compressed nicely due to this quality.
Accuracy is also a huge quality of these shafts. You will see consistent shots over and over again in terms of flight and distance, with shot dispersion being minimal and tight. I was able to replicate iron distances over and over again without changing my swing too much, and when equipped with a properly-fitting iron head, the Project X shafts are deadly on the course… in a good way.
It should be noted, however, that these shafts will drop your spin and launch numbers. Holding greens may be an issue for some, especially if your swing speed isn’t fast enough to game these full-time. I did experience more roll-out on all irons, including my PW, which you’ll need to account for during your round and yardage gaps.
Overall Impression
As mentioned, I’ve played with the Project X iron shafts many times in my golfing career. While these are not the best-fitting shafts for my game right now, faster-swinging players will benefit greatly from their accuracy and control. Getting these iron shafts dialed in with a certified club fitter is vitally important, especially due to their low-spin, low-launch quality.
