Often overlooked or dismissed as just another golf accessory, the golf towel can be one of your most important pieces of equipment. While they’ll never hit a shot with it, golfers who use a golf towel can help their game in a number of different ways.

Use a Golf Towel to Clean Your Clubs

The most obvious use for a golf towel is to keep your golf clubs clean. This is especially important when you consider the grooves on your club, which help with spin and accuracy on your shots.

A golf club with grooves caked in dirt or grass will impose less spin on shots than they otherwise would. Spin on your golf ball is an important element of the game as it helps shots hold greens, improves launch with shots, and can even keep your ball flying in a consistent direction. Golfers of any ability want to keep the ball high in the air most of the time to get the full benefit of a well-struck shot.

Use a Golf Towel to Clean Your Golf Ball

Another common use of a golf towel is to keep your golf ball clean. A dirty golf ball can impact any flight characteristics of a shot, including the aforementioned spin. In fact, an excessively dirty golf ball may fly offline due to its dimples being caked with dirt or grass.

When on the putting green, it’s very important to keep your golf ball clean. Using a golf towel to wipe your golf ball clean will prevent putts from rolling offline due to debris or dirt. In this case, properly using your golf towel can literally improve your putting game.

Use a Golf Towel to Wipe Down Your Grips

While this is most likely a use for players in excessive heat or rainy days, using your golf towel to keep your grips dry can be important.

Most golf grips are made with rubber, polymer, or another synthetic material than can get slippery when wet. Sweat from your hands or water from a rainy day can make holding onto the club more difficult, even with the aide of a golf glove. Keeping half of your golf towel as dry as possible to wipe off this excessive moisture can help you remain in control of your club when swinging.

There are a number of additional uses for a golf towel, but those above are the most common. How else have you seen golf towels used? Write them down in the comments below.
