REVIEW: ASICS Gel Course Duo BOA Golf Shoes

The new partnership between Srixon Golf and ASICS has produced the new ASICS Gel Course Duo BOA golf shoes, a highly innovative and comfortable option for golfers. Featuring many of the characteristics found in their popular gym shoe lines, the ASICS BOA might be one of the most comfortable shoes — golf or not — I’ve ever tried.

The most distinguishing feature of the ASICS Gel Course Duo BOA golf shoes are their “laces;” crisscrossing wire-like strings that tighten with the turn of a dial and loosen using the same mechanism. This is a feature that has been available on other shoes in the past, most of which would loosen as I walked, which is incredibly frustrating. I was happy to see this wasn’t the case with the ASICS design; instead, the shoes remained tight and snug throughout my round.

These shoes also feature ASICS’ patented FlyteFoam technology, making them extremely lightweight for a shoe that has some heft. These are not your typical golf shoes: they look and feel exactly like a pair of running or gym shoes, which is a positive in my book. Their overall weight is feather-like, making them incredibly easy to wear.

The shoes’ design allows for a great deal of shock absorption as well, working with the golfer throughout his or her swing to provide traction when needed. As someone who is working on his footwork, I found the ASICS BOA’s to provide me the comfortable base I need when driving into the ground during my follow-through.

ASICS Gel Course Duo BOA spikes.

The spike pattern is also noteworthy, as it features a mixture of soft spikes and “spikeless” nubs. I sometimes find softspikes to be a bit too sharp, especially on soft greens. This feature on the BOAs was consistent with other brands, however it did not seem like I was tearing up the turf any more than normal. The BOAs felt secure and sturdy at all times during my round, and the idea of slipping never crossed my mind.

Water protection was also a plus with the ASICS BOAs. While they are not billed to be waterproof, I found them to be quite adequate in this area as my feet remained dry, even on a soggy day. The fit of these shoes is fantastic, remaining snug where you need them to be while “roomy” in the toes to allow them to move around a bit.

The ASICS Gel Course Duo BOA golf shoes are available in three different color combinations and multiple sizes. They retail for $179.99 and are available to order on Srixon.com.
