REVIEW: Wilson Staff Model Utility Iron

The new Wilson Staff utility iron borrows design features from the incredibly attractive Staff Model blades released earlier this year, while offering technology any player needs from a hybrid replacement. Gorgeous in its design, the Wilson Staff Model utility iron is one of the best in its class.

Background and Design

The new Wilson Staff Model utility irons started as a prototype for their tour players, whom they call their Wilson Advisory Staff members. This iron features a hollow body design seen in competing clubs of this type, which helps with distance and forgiveness. Coupled with the brand’s C300 maraging steel face, these irons have all the tools to help you hit rockets.

“The Staff Model Utility Irons will give golfers confidence on every shot and in every condition,” said Jon Pergande, Manager of Golf Club Innovation. “Originally created for our professional staff members, we are excited to bring the utility irons to golfers and believe the strong mix of distance and forgiveness will enable players to attack the course with more confidence.”

Each iron also comes with a seven-gram weight in the sole, which pushes the center of gravity as low as possible to help you get the ball in the air. Each iron comes stock with a KBS Tour Hybrid graphite shaft and are available in 18-, 21- and 24-degree lofts.

Performance and Feel

As someone who prefers the look and feel of a utility iron over a hybrid, I could not be more excited to try out the Wilson Staff Model utility iron.

This club has everything you could possibly want in a utility. The look at address is perfect as the club frames the ball nicely without looking too “hefty” on the ground. The back of the club does appear to carry more weight toward the toe, which offers a slightly closed appearance. This may be a dissatisfier for some, but I found the clubhead shape to fit my eye nicely.

At impact the club feels strong. As you would suspect with forged clubs, the ball feels muted when hit but not too soft. As much as I want my irons to feel like they are compressing the ball, I want a utility to feel powerful and a little more on the hard side. The Wilson Staff Model utility excels in this quality.

Distance was similar to my gamer, along with launch and peak height. This was no surprise, of course, yet still an attractive quality as I want to know what to expect from a utility. Yes, it’s always nice to pull a utility on a tight par-4 knowing you’ll hit the fairway with a little extra distance compared to a stock iron. Wilson’s newest offering checked this box for me as well.

Overall Impression

I’ve only spent a limited amount of time with the Wilson Staff Model utility iron, but it has left a lasting impression nonetheless. For me, the differentiating quality of this club compared to others in its class is its design. I can’t get over how gorgeous this club looks.

If you are thinking about replacing your hybrids with a utility iron, or simply want to add one to your current bag, I strongly suggest checking out the Wilson Staff Model utility. You’ll absolutely love the look, feel, and performance of this club.
